I am super thankful to my friend Stephanie for shooting this iphone snap of me during this session!\u00a0 It was a great day, and very windy, which is why I needed Stephany!<\/p>\n
When I shoot outside, I don’t use any kind of flash, but about 90% of the time I use a reflector to pop the light around where I need it!\u00a0 Reflectors get knocked about by the wind, so it’s helpful to have a friend who can help keep it from blowing away!<\/p>\n

One of my favorite things to do with a kid in a session (even though this pic is not from a session) is to hand over my “big camera” and let him hold it and shoot.\u00a0 The parents get all nervous (hehe) and the kid grows 10 feet tall. It’s a treat to get to see their faces just light up with the privilege!<\/p>\n

My husband and I sortof have the ongoing hobby of building stuff together…. furniture, playgrounds, cool shelves… whatever.\u00a0 It’s a neat little cooperation we have.\u00a0 The disign is usually 90% mine, and the execution is 90% his.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In this case, I wanted a cool bookshelf for my second daughter’s room.\u00a0 I get very in to “nesting” and “getting the room ready” when I am preggo.\u00a0 I dunno, it’s fun for me!\u00a0 So we built the book shelves while I was pregnant, and the whole time I had this photoraph that I would make in mind….<\/p>\n

My second daughter got evicted from the nursery, and my first son moved in.<\/p>\n
We repainted everything to make the nursery a boys’ room, and of course the bookshelves got painted too!\u00a0 And so we made this photograph…\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yup. Now we need 4 kids in the shelves!<\/p>\n
So in case you’re temped to report me or something, don’t.\u00a0 It’s not fake, per se, but it’s also not as dangerous as it looks. Never were there multiple children in the shelves at one time!\u00a0 For example, when I photographed the baby, my husband was no less than a foot away! Yup. That’s the magic of using a tripod, controlled light, paying close attention to shadows, and of course, PHOTOSHOP!<\/p>\n
I actually photographed each individual kid, took the time to get the shot I wanted, and then removed that kid and went on to the next kid.\u00a0 Rinse and repeat that four times.\u00a0 Then I pieced it together in postproduction!\u00a0 Voila!<\/p>\n

So this is a fairly personal, kinda monumental, part of our story…<\/p>\n
My second daughter and second son are both “rainbow babies.”\u00a0 Ever heard that term?\u00a0 “Rainbow babies” are babies who are born healthy after a miscarriage.<\/p>\n
Rainbows are the beautiful reminder of God’s goodness and his faithfulness. (See Genesis 9… and then keep reading till you get to the cross.)<\/p>\n
Five of our children were born into heaven over the past 7 years or so.\u00a0 We are no stranger to heartbreak, confusion, anger and all the fog that goes along with grief!\u00a0 And it’s a tricky thing when such deep pain is associated with the hope and anticipation of birth!<\/p>\n
The reason why I share this with the world is simply to say to some of you that you are not alone in this.\u00a0 I know that for some, your pregnancy is fraught with fear and cynicism, and you may be exhausted by the rollercoaster of emotions you have experienced.\u00a0 \u00a0I have been exactly in that place.\u00a0 There is no Hallmark greeting card for this type of thing.\u00a0 But when you can’t muster up the energy to be excited for your baby to come, your friends and your family can help with that!\u00a0 You never walk alone!<\/p>\n

It requires set-up, preparation, a plan, supplies, instinct, experience, and self-awareness. \u00a0I have learned to troubleshoot why exactly a baby might fuss, and get creative when a pose mom wants isn\u2019t working. \u00a0I love this kind of session because I have the ability to control so many aspects of the session that making an amazing photograph is very achievable.\r\n\r\nI love the child for completely different reasons. \u00a0Every child behaves completely differently. \u00a0Each child responds to me differently. But every child is authentic. \u00a0They are who they are. They are not yet self-conscious or concerned about appearances; they just care about being silly, or looking at a leaf, or climbing stairs up and down up and down. \u00a0A lot of these kids smile because of\u2026 nothing. \u00a0Because our eyes met. That\u2019s it! \u00a0Or because I made a funny sound. \u00a0I think most adults could take a lesson from these tots. \u00a0Yes, they too are challenging. \u00a0No kid stays put like a newborn does. \u00a0If they\u2019re awake, they wiggle and wander. \u00a0So I constantly adjust. \u00a0I\u2019m constantly keeping the session moving.\r\n\r\nI really also love shooting the moms and dads too - because I am one. \u00a0I know what it\u2019s like to be photographed 6 days after having a baby. We've been on that side of th camera now four times with four newborns. \u00a0It\u2019s quite the vulnerable place to be. \u00a0I felt not particularly pretty, and stressed out, and completely emotional. \u00a0SO, when two young parents come to my studio, I bet they are in a similar boat. \u00a0I try to serve them the way I needed.
